Cheerleading
To be on the Carl B. Bruce cheer team, you must be a 7th- or 8th-grader. Cheerleaders must keep a C or above average in every class in order to be eligible to cheer. Cheerleaders should be enthusiastic and have school spirit. Each candidate has to pass a school physical with a professional doctor because cheer is a sport, and you must be in good condition. Most importantly, you must have good character because you’re a leader representing our school! If you have any questions concerning cheer, please see Mrs. Hood or email her at deidra.hood@kckps.org.
Cross Country
Cross Country is a fall sport for 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade students. Details will be posted soon about the season. See Mr. Dalton or email him at jackson.dalton@kckps.org for information.
Football
7th- and 8th-graders interested in playing football and 6th graders interested in being team managers should read this document. For additional information about this fall sport, see Mr. Hylton, Mr. McArdle or Mr. Flores.
Soccer (Boys)
Boys’ soccer players begin their conditioning and season after spring break. We practice, on average, four days a week, and our games are held Saturdays at one of the KCK high schools. Practice includes dribbling, running and scrimmages. The game schedule is on the CBB calendar, which is at the bottom of the Home page of the website. Contact Coach Archacki or Coach Flores for more information.
Soccer (Girls)
Prior to spring break, 7th- and 8th-grade girls interested in playing soccer may attend an informational meeting and try out for the team. Sixth-grade students may be utilized as team managers. The first and foremost requirement is a positive attitude. Young ladies interested in being a part of the team need to be mindful of their grades throughout the school year and be positive role models for their peers. For more information, see Coach Williams or email her at lorraine.williams@kckps.org or see Coach Dove or email her at katelin.dove@kckps.org.
Track & Field
Track is a spring sport for 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade students. All four meets are in April. Please see Ms. Ambroshia, Mr. Flowers or Mr. Hylton for information. Their email addresses are ambroshia.usman@kckps.org; terrence.flowers@kckps.org; and krystopher.hylton@kckps.org.
Volleyball
In volleyball, 7th and 8th graders concentrate on fundamentals, team building and sisterhood. Volleyball is a fall sport. We get the athletic season underway! Our first game is the first week in September.
All interested players are invited to try out. We encourage anyone planning to try out to get their physical over the summer! Contact Coach Minor or Coach Hohly for more information.

The debate season begins in August. Tournaments start in October and go through March. Team members can compete in two events: Student Congress (students debate multiple bills using Robert’s Rules of Order) and Policy (two teams of two students debate against each other in formal rounds). For information, see Mr. Scheetz or email him at michael.scheetz@kckps.org. For details, go to http://debatekansascity.org.
Math Relays
Math Relays has been in existence for 15 years, and students who have experienced the competition with other students in the district have seen the benefits of participating and showing just how smart they are. It is a fun and exciting experience that yields awards and recognition. Our competition will be in March. Sixth, 7th and 8th graders who are looking for more information should contact Mrs. Hilleary.

Student Council
Student Council members will build student leadership skills by:
- organizing and leading school activities
- organizing and leading community projects
- communicating the opinions and concerns of the student body to school administration
- being the student voice that works with staff and administration to identify and solve issues encountered by students
- promoting school spirit and encouraging student involvement in organized activities
All students are welcome to join and participate as long as they uphold the expectations for student behavior and academic performance of the district and Carl B. Bruce. Once the year begins, the Student Council will meet to decide upon the date to hold an election for officers. Elected positions will have more responsibility and involvement in organizing and leading activities and projects.
